Organic Aquaculture

Organic Aquaculture

The steadily increasing global demand for seafood has lead to a rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry because the quantities that can be fished are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of this growing demand.

Organic aquaculture production provides innovative aquaculture producers with the opportunity to distinguish themselves from industrial aquaculture producers and to boost their income.

In Austria and Germany, it is mainly carp, trout and char that are produced according to organic requirements. Detailed rules on organic aquaculture animal production are laid down in the Commission Regulation (EC) No 710/2009 of 5.August.2009 thereby amending Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 and its implementation guidelines. The most important parts of this regulation cover feeding of aquaculture animals, animal welfare, disease prevention and water conservation.

Organic aquaculture production that protects both the environment and resources can also be of interest from an economical viewpoint for aquaculture producers.
